OUR STORY
1994 - 2000
2000 - 2013
2013-present

Unisport (originally in Spanish “Instituto de Estudios Deportivos, IESPORT”) was the first online business school for sports managers. Founded in 1994 in Barcelona, the initiative was a pioneer in distance learning for Sports Management. IESPORT was born from the experience of more than 30 years of history in education of its founders and its link to competitive sports.
The need to train professional and elite athletes, as well as the appearance – from the 1990s onwards – of a new sports model in Spain, were determining factors in the growth of IESPORT. The organisation of the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992, sporting successes, and the launch of the ADO plan highlighted the commitment of institutions to promote sports at a national level, while also revealing a significant lack of preparation and training in the management of sports organisations. Above all, this management was characterised by its amateur level and the lack of professionalisation of the managerial structures in an emerging sector with a spectacular future.
The process of creating what would be the first distance learning course in Sports Management in Spain was carried out by a large group of experts: economists with a successful career in the management of entities, lawyers specialising in sports law, specialists in security and protocol, human resources, marketing and public relations…
The Sports Entity Management Course was recognised by the Catalan Institute of News Professions (in Catalan know as Institut Català de Noves Professions, INCANOP), the official body of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Government), for its contribution to a professional field of great future projection.

In October 2001, the training programme in Sports Management was extended to incorporate a second cycle. This led to the creation of the first Master’s Degree in Management of Sports Entities.
Later, in 2004, the Course in Management and Direction of Sports Events, a clearly growing area, was launched. During this period, the school’s headquarters had already moved twice due to lack of space. In 2006, the first blended learning course in Management of Sports Entities was created, in collaboration with the Alcobendas Sports Foundation (FUNDAL). Up to 10 editions of blended learning courses were carried out together with public entities and included personalised technical presentations in the programmes.
In 2008, IESPORT received the ISO 9001 quality certification, a recognition of the teamwork and dedication behind their work.
In 2011, the spin-off Unisport Universitas was created, adding the first MBA in Sports Management and a clear international focus.
In 2013, technical and postgraduate areas in Sports Psychology and Coaching, as well as Sports Communication (2015), were created, with a pioneering programme specialising in Sports Social Media Management.

After several expansions, the current headquarters were established in the Tecnocampus university complex, an idyllic setting by the sea in Mataró-Barcelona.
In 2017, the Sports Journalism and Communication programme was created. In 2018, over 40% of students were international.
In 2019, the 25th anniversary was celebrated. In December, Unisport Universitas acquired the Institute of Sport Studies (in Spain known as Instituto de estudios deportivos, IESPORT), becoming the business school with the largest community of sports management students, with more than 20,000.
